The Importance of Classical Computers

For years, people have talked about quantum computers as if they were going to replace classical ones. The reality we see today in data centers is quite different: classical and quantum computers are learning to work side by side, not one in place of the other.

Two very different collaboration models:

🔹 Sequential model — the classical system sends a problem to the quantum system and waits for the answer. Simple and cost-effective, but slow for anything that requires iteration.

🔹 Tight hybrid model — QPUs, CPUs, and GPUs collaborate in continuous loops, almost in real time. More complex and expensive to build, but it’s the only way to truly make variational algorithms (VQE, QAOA) work, as they require thousands of extremely rapid cycles between classical and quantum systems—especially for quantum error correction, which must occur in microseconds—and which requires more and more classical computation, not less, as systems scale up.

The same logic applies in closely related fields:

🌐 The quantum internet will not replace the fiber-optic networks we use today. It will overlap with them—first as a separate network, then by sharing the same physical infrastructure.

🔐 Post-quantum cryptography isn’t waiting for the arrival of quantum computers to protect us: big tech companies (Google, Cloudflare, Apple) are already combining classical and post-quantum algorithms within the same connection, as a precaution.

Who’s really betting on it: IBM, AMD, NVIDIA, Microsoft, Google Quantum AI, as well as specialists like Riverlane (error correction), Aliro Quantum (networking), and PQShield (cryptography).

The common thread? In every field—computing, networking, security—the winner isn’t the one who replaces one paradigm with another. The winner is the one who integrates them best.
